- New York Times Digital - in online division of New York Times wiki was implemented in 1999. It was the same wiki engine as the one used by Portland Pattern Repository. The main reason for the implementation of wiki was to eliminate unnecessary emails, especially during project management. Implementation was successful but unfortunately tech writer, who was hired in 2000 did not find wiki useful and decided to terminate it. Wiki is still partially used, but it is not a mainstream technology.
- Motorola - department of Systems-on-Chip Design Technology uses TWiki for collaboration and effective knowledge sharing. TWiki was implemented pretty early, in 1999. Manager of the department clearly stated that wiki was much faster and easier to use than Lotus Notes, which was used for collaboration before wiki. Since 1999 TWiki spreads among whole Motorola and helps it to achieve more efficient collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Plain installation of TWiki, which is used by Motorola - Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein - DrKW is an investment bank and is a part of Allianz Group since 2001. In 1996 whole IT strategy of DrKW was redefined - it was decided that it is necessary to offer users better tools for collaboration, communication and knowledge sharing. Several software tools and wiki was among them were installed in 1997. In the beginning wiki was used mainly by people from IT department, but later on it was accepted by other departments. Wiki was used in three main cases: support brainstorming, keep records of meetings and help with preparation of presentations. Today DrKW wiki, which is called DrKWikipedia is used by over 4000 users.
From the previous text it is obvious that wiki is being implemented in corporate environment. Sometimes it is successful implementation (DrKW) and sometimes not (New York Times Digital). In the following text I would like to look more closely on the problem where exactly and how can be wikis used.
