- Wiki as knowledge base or tool for collaborative writing - it is more and more obvious that success of a company is highly dependant on the way how this company gain, share and use knowledge. Knowledge management became big issue in 80s and lot of companies tried to implement KM methods and software. Some were and some weren't successful. In my opinion wiki is a great tool for knowledge sharing - it worked great for Wikipedia, so why it could not work for sharing knowledge inside a company? The biggest challenge to face is to make employees share their knowledge. Why? The reason is simple - they work for the company because they posses specified knowledge, if they share this knowledge, they might not be that valuable for that company. On the other hand, knowledge itself, without people who would use is useless. Only future will show whether wiki will be used as a powerful knowledge management tool. I strongly believe it will!
- Wiki as a CMS for web - it may sound strange, but wiki can also be used as a CMS for web presentation of company. There are some web pages that use wiki as a CMS, for example: beagle-project.org. In my opinion, wiki is a great choice, because it is easy to use and allows everybody to change its contain. This actually means that every department manager could be responsible for that part of wiki, which contains information about his/her department. Information can be changes as necessary without instructing webmaster. On the other hand, wiki has its limitations - especially in design. However, when I was writing my thesis I have successfully implemented wiki with design which is very different from typical wiki installation - please see skolavpohode.cz.
